Baseball Performance Testing in Scottsdale, AZ
Data-Driven Training for Baseball Athletes
Baseball looks slow from the stands, but the margins are razor thin. A hitter has roughly 0.4 seconds to read a pitch, decide whether to swing, and execute. A pitcher's arm must generate rotational forces exceeding 7,000 degrees per second. These demands aren't just talent—they're measurable, and they're trainable.
Our sports performance testing gives athletes (and their parents) a clear picture of exactly where they stand—and exactly what to work on to reach the next level. Whether the goal is earning a high school starting spot, landing a college scholarship, or competing at the professional level, our data replaces guesswork with precision.
This does not replace baseball training; it complements it.
* Ages 13+ | Unless otherwise noted, sports-specific performance testing is available for athletes ages 13 and older. DEXA body composition scans are available for athletes 16 and older. Every package includes a MetPro metabolic coaching consultation to help translate your test results into a personalized nutrition and training plan.
How Each Test Applies to Baseball
Each test below is rated on a 1–6 scale for how critical it is to your sport, with 6 being the most essential.
Strength & Power Assessment
Priority: 6/6 (Critical)
Rotational power is the single most trainable factor in hitting and throwing. The Cressey Power Protocol on the 3D resistance system was specifically designed for rotational athletes like baseball players.
In under 5 minutes, our 3D resistance platform tests your full-body strength, power, and speed across real-world movement patterns. Unlike a bench press or squat max, this measures how your body actually produces and transfers force—exactly the way it does in baseball. You'll see your power output, asymmetries, force-velocity profile, and specific training recommendations.
For baseball players, rotational power is king. The assessment specifically measures trunk rotation power, counter-movement rotation, and full-body sequencing—the exact kinetic chain used in hitting and throwing.
Cognitive Performance Testing
Priority: 6/6 (Highly Important)
A hitter has roughly 0.4 seconds to decide whether to swing. Pitch recognition, tracking speed, and reaction time are among the strongest cognitive predictors of batting performance.
Our cognitive performance evaluation is a 40–45 minute assessment that measures nine distinct cognitive functions at millisecond precision—including perception speed, search efficiency, tracking capacity, spatial memory, and improvisation. Unlike a traditional IQ or reaction-time test, this evaluation is sport-specific, measuring the exact cognitive skills used during game-speed decision-making.
For baseball hitters, the evaluation measures tracking capacity (following a pitch from release to plate), perception speed (recognizing pitch type), and decision-making speed (swing or take). For fielders, it measures spatial awareness and reactive decision-making.
Cognitive Skills we Test for Baseball
The evaluation produces a detailed cognitive profile with sport-specific benchmarking and tailored on-field drills designed by top-level coaches to measurably improve your weaknesses. We offer different tests for hitters and pitchers.
Perception Speed
How fast do you process the speed of the game?
Timing Control

Instinctive Learning*
Do you pick up on a pitcher's subtle tells and tendencies?
3D Functional Movement Assessment
Priority: 5/6 (Highly Important)
Hip mobility, shoulder range of motion, and trunk rotation are essential for both performance and injury prevention. Asymmetries in these areas are the leading cause of arm injuries in pitchers.
Using markerless 3D motion capture, this assessment evaluates over 200 data points across your entire body in under 5 minutes. You'll receive a personalized Movement Health Score along with a visual report showing range of motion for every major joint, mobility restrictions, postural imbalances, and compensatory movement patterns.
For baseball players, shoulder range of motion, hip internal/external rotation, and thoracic spine mobility are the critical measurements. Asymmetries in these areas are the leading predictors of arm injuries in pitchers.
DEXA Body Composition Scan
Priority: 4/6 (Important)
Lean mass distribution—especially in the trunk, shoulders, and legs—correlates with bat speed, throwing velocity, and durability across a long season.
Your scan reveals total body fat percentage, lean muscle mass, bone mineral density, visceral fat, and regional body composition—showing exactly how fat and muscle are distributed across your body. For baseball athletes, this means understanding whether your body composition is helping or hurting your performance.
*Available for athletes ages 16 and older
Target Body Fat Ranges
As Measured on Dexa Machine
Male Baseball Athletes
High School: 12-18%
D3 College: 12-17%
D1 College: 10-16%
Professional: 8-16%
Note: DEXA-measured body fat percentages typically read 3–5% higher than skinfold or bio-impedance methods. These ranges are calibrated for DEXA.
Resting Metabolic Rate Assessment
Priority: 3/6 (Beneficial)
Useful for players trying to add lean mass in the off-season or managing body composition during the long season.
Your RMR test tells you exactly how many calories your body burns at rest—the foundation of any effective nutrition plan. For athletes, this removes the guesswork from fueling: you'll know precisely how much to eat to gain muscle, lose fat, or maintain performance weight.
💡 When this test jumps in priority: If you're an athlete who can't seem to gain muscle despite eating a lot, or you can't lose body fat despite training hard, your metabolism may be the missing piece. An RMR test can reveal whether you're under-eating (slowing your metabolism), over-eating, or misallocating macros. This is especially common in athletes going through growth spurts, weight cuts, or body recomposition phases.
VO2 Max Testing
Priority: 2/6 (Situational)
Baseball is predominantly anaerobic with short bursts of speed. VO2 max has limited direct impact on game performance but supports recovery during a grueling 162-game professional season.
VO2 max measures the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during intense exercise—the gold standard for cardiovascular fitness. Your test also reveals your personalized heart rate training zones, fat-burning efficiency, and aerobic ceiling, so you know exactly how to train.
VO2 Max Benchmarks
Measured as ML/KG/Min
Male Baseball Athletes
High School: 40-46
D3 College: 42-48
D1 College: 46-52
Professional: 48-56
Outfielders and middle infielders benefit most from higher aerobic fitness. Pitchers and catchers tend to have moderate values. First basemen and designated hitters can function at the lower end.

FAQs
-
This testing supports pitchers, catchers, infielders, and outfielders from age 13 and up—whether you’re trying to make a club showcase team, earn a roster spot at a top high school, or get on college scouts’ radars. Position players and pitchers have overlapping needs but slightly different priorities in strength, movement, and cognitive skills.
-
Objective data on rotational power, body composition, movement quality, and cognitive decision‑making pairs perfectly with exit velocity, pitching velocity, and on‑field stats. It helps coaches quantify your physical ceiling and your ability to adapt to high‑level training, which can be the deciding factor between similar players at showcases.
-
Strength & power and body composition are critical for creating bat speed and throwing velocity, while movement quality and cognitive testing are highly important for staying healthy and making better decisions at the plate and in the field. Resting metabolic rate and VO2 max are beneficial, but RMR becomes highly important when an athlete struggles to gain lean mass or maintain energy through long seasons.
-
Yes. The movement assessment is specifically designed to be low‑load and diagnostic—it helps identify shoulder, elbow, and trunk mobility restrictions that may be contributing to discomfort. Strength & power testing can be adjusted to off‑load the arm as needed while still capturing meaningful data.
-
Most baseball athletes re-test 2–3 times per year: at the start of off‑season training, mid‑off‑season, and right before the competitive season or key showcase events.
